right of passage
My short story was supposed to go up at Critters yesterday, but a new server was recently installed, so some things have been delayed. I went to the site today to make sure my story was formatted correctly. It is. But it also contains the following header:
[*** Warning! Critters auto language detector has
detected adult language in this manuscript. ***]
Woah! I wonder what I wrote :o? I mean, if it had been somewhat like yesterday's post, I could understand... Maybe "breasts" is now an adult word...
Good to know.
Hey, is this one of those writerly rights of passage people talk so much about?

Critters is an online writing/crit group, and a pretty decent one. It's run by Andrew Burt, the SFWA VP (or at least he used to be). My story was posted so it can be critiqued for the week.

Seriously, I read about the Spicy Slipstream Stories Jay Lake and Nick Mamatas is putting together and it's entirely different than anything I have ever written, so I thought it would be a good exercise.
I just did a word count: There are four incidences of "hell", one "damn", one "son of a bitch" and about a dozen "breast" references and one allusion.
I'm sure that had I written it as an actual submission and not just an exercise and then submitted to Mr. Lake and Mr. Mamatas that they would have been absolutely scandalized and would have asked me to never send such things to them ever, ever again. Also, they probably would have sent me a bill for their therapy. As it stands only about 15 or 20 Critters will be sending me their bills.

I have a character* in the story who I think may need to grow about six more breasts. That'll be a good way to flesh that character out.
*The Spider Woman from Lakota mythology. She could have a breast for each leg... Of course, she'd also need to grow some more legs... Kinky.

Hmmm, suddenly I'm in the mood for chicken.

Over at the Journalscape journal (www.journalscape.com/maggie if anyone wants to look at it and doesn't know how to find it) in the same subject (sometimes the two journals overlap) fried chicken inters into the comment section.
Luna already stopped by to do some editing and grab some chicken before she ran off. Why don't you?
