Dictionary dot com has these definitions for competent:
1. having suitable or sufficient skill, knowledge, experience, etc., for some purpose; properly qualified: He is perfectly competent to manage the bank branch. 2. adequate but not exceptional.
I think you were using competent as in definition number two, while others are using definition number one.
When I think of competent, I usually think of definition number two, myself.
