Considering I have this writing journal, I really probably should use it.

Actual, physical writing has been kind of slow so far this year.

I have a short story I've been working on since last summer. I pound at it, turn it around, pound some more, turn it upside down, and still it fights me. I will be victorious, however. In the meantime, it's frustrating, which is I was glad to complete "Under the Raspberries" this weekend.

"Under the Raspberries" is my first attempt at actual flash fiction. Originally at about 1,000 words, it now stands at just over 500. I'm afraid that by losing some of the size I removed some of the really good stuff, murdered some good darlings that made the story's first incarnation better than its last. Some rewriting and reinserting may be called for.

In other writing news, I wrote a short story today. I was having a terrible time sleeping last night, so I came up with a story, mapped it out and got up today and threw it onto paper. I usually spend so much time trying to put a story together, it amazes me when one just shows up, knocks at the door, and completely reveals itself to me.

The story is called "Earth and Clay". I believe it would be categorized as "slipstream". And I think I like it a good amount, which will just have to be good enough for the rest of the world. Thankfully, it runs about 3,500 words -- a good length for a short story. Last year I had so many that went on and on and probably needlessly. I've been trying to be more concise and small in scope lately. It's an important skill to be able to sit down to write a short story and not produce a novella if that's not what the story requires.

I hope this latest rash of actual productive writing stays; it has been slow lately. But I have a baby coming in 20 1/2 days, and I suppose a good many things will be changing at that point.

What comes next? Either another short story that's been asking to be written for a few months now, but has been put on the back burner so I could work on the one that's being difficult, or I'll face the difficult one head on again. I doubt it will allow me to force it to be written, though. Stubborn things, stories.
